What do future-ready children look like? Since the future is so unpredictable, there must be a way we can prepare our children for it… Can you “future-proof” your child?
Thinking about the future, the great unknown that lies ahead, can cause a lot of anxiety. Worrying about our children’s future can be even more stressful. But here is the good news: Not only is there a set of skills and abilities that will make a difference down the road no matter what the future looks like, but these are also the things we can do today.
So what are those future-ready abilities that truly matter?
What will stand the test of time and will be relevant no matter how many years into the future we look? If you tuned into the previous episode (Episode 051) you’ll remember that I invited you to ponder with me about the future our children will live in. Given how drastically different we can expect that future to be, I offered you to think about the kind of essential skills and abilities that will make our children successful as grown-ups.
In this episode, I share what I believe are the most essential skills. These abilities will make our children future-ready, or as I heard some parents say, “future-proof.” The short story is that, in the digital age and the age of fast technology, it is not the tech skills that our children will need the most.
What we need now more than ever, is to make sure our children stay human.
To maintain our sense of humanness, we need to shift our focus on who our children are, as opposed to what they know how to do. Yup, it gets a bit philosophical in places, but I think it is needed every once in a while. The most human quality we possess is our Sense of Self and our Self-Awareness.
And it doesn’t stop here. Self-awareness and the Sense of Self help the child to acquire such important abilities as Self-Regulation, Resilience, and Resourcefulness. These abilities are the secrets to children who are future-ready. When our children are able to self-regulate, to stay resilient, and find what they need, they will be ready for whatever comes their way in the future.
There is a lot we can do today to develop these abilities and qualities in our children. Stay tuned for future conversations where we will focus on each of these individually. (Sign up below not to miss upcoming episodes!)
